About Shared Meals

Masai Mara gave us crazy, unbelievable, and hair-raising experiences during our very first visit. Beginner’s luck? Maybe! But one incident truly stood out, a wildlife safari experience that redefined our understanding of this bewildering jungle hierarchy.

The Big Cat Spectacle Unfolds

There we were, seated in our Masai Mara safari vehicle, with the kings, queens and their cute cubs right in front of us. No safari story from Masai Mara could ever be complete without witnessing lions in their natural habitat. We were about to get a ringside seat to the intricate dance of power in the royal family!

Witnessing “Lion’s Share” Firsthand

We’d all heard the expression ‘lion’s share’, but that day, we understood its raw reality. A magnificent dominant male, clearly the boss, was in complete control. But what we saw next shocked us. The dominant lioness, the leader of the hunting pack and responsible for the kill, waited patiently. After a more than decent wait, she tentatively approached for her portion. His response? A ferocious snarl from the lion. Talk about male dominance, phew!

Thanks to Our Extraordinary Hosts and Guides

This once-in-a-lifetime spectacle wouldn’t have been possible without our extraordinary hosts and expert Masai guides. Their knowledge and intuition led us directly to this big cat sighting, allowing us to witness the intricate pride dynamics unfold just a few feet away. And of course to our amazing hosts at Porini Cheetah Camp at Ol Kinyei Conservancy, without whom all of these would never have been possible.

Introducing the Breakaway Sampu Angare Pride

The pride we encountered was the Breakaway Sampu Angare pride. Meet Bully, the large and formidable male, Layai, the dominant lioness and Napono and Nentubui, the other two members. Watching them interact over their meal was like watching a live Nat Geo wildlife documentary play out right before our eyes.

Unbelievable, Unforgettable Masai Mara

Witnessing a lion hunt aftermath and the intricate power play within a lion pride was truly unbelievable. This Kenya safari experience in the heart of the Masai Mara left us awestruck and counting our lucky stars for such incredible beginner’s luck.

The Writer

A traveller through many a season
Have traversed roads, seen the close, the distant horizon
Some tucked-away dreams are my treasures
I delve into this trove when in distress or despair.
Don’t you too have a much-cherished list of “one-day-if”s
That distant dream, often far, but at times so within reach?
And then the day breaks and with it my fairy tale
Leaving behind the lovely feel of its happy trail.

This space is for those like me, so much yet unaccomplished,
To pen down some “what-if”s, those crazy wishes, some distant dreams.
Let our bedouin minds wander off all limitations
And the rush of the mountain stream wash away our inhibitions.
