Me, the Misfit

When I see women, young and not-so green, swaying in unison, singing and dancing

Falling on each other, merriment on their faces complete,

Laughing at the same jokes, rolling at the same lines,

I wonder why I do not belong here, blending as one amongst them

Where I could lose myself in a crowd, be another happy hen!

When I see big party pics popping on my Facebook

Of bright lights and dresses, sequins and shine all across,

And food platter with fine cutlery,

Phones capturing the madness, the laughter, all finery

The fake smiles, the mindless selfies,

All stored like gems to show the world, an insurance in times of miseries.

Do I spot loneliness hidden behind those thick layers of paint,

And a desperate need to blend, to hold hands from deep down of their living hells?

Where perhaps pride has been compromised, kohl has been smudged by tears

Talent has been subdued, pushed to oblivion, left with a loneliness stemming from fear,

Where the clear soul of yesteryears has been pushed behind curtains,

One that emerges wears a mask of happiness, of that I am certain.

I picture myself in this ocean of glamour, a complete alien,

Stranger in a world of shimmer and shine and of party tales

I visualise myself in this herd, lonely in a crowd

Wrapped in silence, concealed by a shroud,

I protect myself from this endless shine, by the light I own

With my own humour to laugh at, with my precious little circle of love, happy to be perched on my own little throne.
